Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) Courses


What is involved?

All learner motorcycle and moped riders must satisfactorily complete a CBT course before riding on the road (phone for advice and exemptions). The CBT can be done on either an automatic moped or manual motorcycle.

When you arrive for your CBT we will check your licence (photocard & paper counterpart) and your eyesight to make sure you can read a car numberplate from 20.5 metres, so make sure you bring your glasses if necessary.

The CBT is a completely practical course and there is no written test.

The CBT course covers five sections called elements
Element A Introduction
 
  • We will explain when and why the CBT was introduced
  • The layout of the course
  • The importance of the right equipment and clothing
Element B On Site Training
 
  • Introduction to the controls of the motorcycle
  • Basic machine safety checks
  • On and off the stand
  • Wheel the bike to the left and right 
  • Stop the bike by using the front brake
  • Start and stop the engine
Element C On Site Riding (In this element you start to ride your motorcycle)
  You will practice until you can:
 
  • Ride your motorcycle in a straight line and stop using both brakes
  • Ride the machine slowly under control
  • Bring your machine to a controlled stop as in an emergency
  • Change gear satisfactorily
  • Ride your machine in a figure of eight circuit
  • Carry out a U turn
  • Carry out rear observations correctly
  • Carry out left and rights turns using Observation Signal Lifesaver Manoeuvre routine, and Position Speed Look routine
Element D

On Road Training - This consists of an informal chat with your instuctor

When you have satisfactorily completed the course you will be given the CBT Certificate (DL196) This validates the provisional entitlement on your licence
The CBT certificate is valid for Two Years
